Work begins on Canal City at LBI

Work has started on Canal City, a new development on the outskirts of Georgetown at La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara.

It is part of a wider plan with the King’s Foundation to blend modern urban living with nature, heritage and wellness.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali spoke about the development on the Starting Point podcast streamed on Friday.

Canal City will use the irrigation and drainage canal at LBI. The canal will serve as a waterfront for commerce, recreation and housing.

“We have already started work in Canal City,” the president confirmed.

The King’s Foundation is an educational charity established in 1990 by King Charles III (then the Prince of Wales) dedicated to building sustainable communities, promoting practical education, and protecting nature. It will provide expertise to Guyana in urban renewal and the restoration of city streets and avenues.

Meanwhile, in Georgetown, walking circuits are being developed along the city’s avenues to promote wellness and walking.

These will aim to improve security, parking, and safety. They also include a wellness avenue on Thomas Street with added greenery.

A major plan for the Kingston area would rebuild its waterfront in a modern style while safeguarding the area’s historical value. President Ali said the projects will link the city’s attractions so that residents and visitors can explore Georgetown on foot.

“You’ll be walking through history, commerce, the culture, the architectural beauty, nature…everything will be so interlinked and integrated in a safe way that you will be enjoying walking through the city,” he said.

He added that the greener spaces will also help expand Guyana’s biodiversity by creating more habitat for birds, plants and animals.

“Imagine walking down the street and you’re able to see and experience the butterflies in the trees, the kiskadees back in all of the avenues, the heritage that it showcases,” President Ali said.

He said the initiatives create a liveable environment that prioritises wellness, health and ecosystems. They also connect with the work of the Global Biodiversity Alliance, which looks at how natural spaces can promote living in harmony with nature.
